Last August, my family and I holidayed in Somerset which was a nice change from our usual haunts. I and my dad are really keen on geology so one of the days we travelled to the coast. As Lyme Regis would be heaving with tourists, we went instead to the slightly quieter but no less beautiful Charmouth in search of fossils.

After several long hours of finding nothing but tiny pieces of broken shells, something shiny caught my eye and I looked down to find this gorgeous example of an Ammonite, perfectly preserved at my feet. This is it as I found it, not cleaned up or moved from the sediment.

Neat find!

Really wicked ridges on that one!

I also like the bronze coloration, gives it an almost Steampunk look.

Did you keep this one?

Oh of course! :D I had great plans to make it into some kind of jewelery but I think I'm probably going to mount it in a nice box and eventually keep it in a lovely old set of drawers with a green felt lining. (It was originally used to house bird eggs, we got it second hand)

I gave it a rough clean and put it in a box...which is still in the garage! It's a complete tip in there and I don't know where anything is so I'm going to have to prod my dad into re discovering it for me! lol

LOL, our basement is the same way. I've got a cow's jawbone and a groundhog skull in there somewhere that I'm gonna have to dig out. I just hope nothing's happened to them!
