It had been a big decision to travel over to Portugal for a show but now that they were here, the team from EAE didn't regret it a bit. The cloud that had obscured most of the sky that night had shifted slighty, exposing a full moon and a whole galaxy of stars above.
Golegã was beautiful in the late evening light, however, the cold temperatures felt much more like chilly autumnal Scotland than continental Europe! Tamarind didn't seem to mind though. He was home, back in the land of his forebears and tossed his head, swished his tail and pranced around at every other Lusitano he came across. To look at him you'd never know he'd been born at a small stud down in southwestern England!
David did his best to keep him steady as the stallion paced and jittered on the spot outside the arena. He wasn't worried or tense as he chewed at the bit and threw his head around like something possessed, no, he just wanted attention.
Finally they were ready to go, but before they took so much as a step forwards, Lisa appeared beside them and thrust a small fabric union flag into David's hand.
'You forgot to sew it on! Hurry!'
'Well what am I supposed to do with it then? Put it on my hat? I don't have time!'
...
With the flag firmly wedged between the band of the strangely comfortable hat, David and Tamarind were finally ready to go. Tam didn't need telling twice and shot off at a canter the instant David's hands moved forward along his neck. First up was a trio of bending poles which the Lusitano wove through like a pro, David barely needing to steer at all. This was followed up by a bridge, decorated profusely with a vast array of brightly coloured flowers. Purple. Tam's colour David thought pointlessly as the stallion leapt the bridge in almost a single stride.
'Steady lad, steady!'
He was getting a little too fast for David's liking so he increased his hold on the reins and the horse relented, slowing his gallop to a beautifully collected canter as they approached the third obstacle and second set of bending poles. His neck reining had always been good but he excelled himself this time round, weaving and turning with all the ease of a working cowhorse.
...Not that Tam ever actually DID any work, mind.

Argh, this has been in 'nearly finished' mode for what feels like FOREVER! XD I hope it's suitable for the show and if not, let me know and I'll do something else.
